Linux “watch” command and VMWare Snapshot deletion

leave a comment »

Sometimes you have a really big snapshot that takes more than the 15 minutes Virtual Center gives to delete it.

In that cases after the timeout the snapshot continues being deleted on the Host Server.

So it is better to order the Remove Snapshot in the Host not in the Virtual Center because the Host hast no timeout.

Furthermore, here is a command to console of ESX to monitor the deletion process:

watch "ls -oghut --full-time *.vmdk"

or

watch "ls -lhut --time-style=full-iso *.vmdk

If you use ESXi you don’t have watch command available but you can do the ls command to see the process.
